Artist Statement
I grew up on a sheep station in the South Island of New Zealand. Dry, rugged and rocky hills contrasted by weeping willows and a meandering river bed not only provided a study in contrast but an opportunity for exploration and creativity. My aesthetic as an artist remains influenced by the farm’s environment. I often use contrast in my work; juxtaposing colors and textures, and employing a combination of mixed and patinated metals. My Dad's work shed was always full of intriguing bits and pieces. An array of hammers and wrenches lined the walls and bench tops and I’m sure this is where my fascination for hand tools was born. My mum also helped inspire a love of working with my hands. She would make our meals, clothes and even playdough from scratch and I believe this appreciation for all things handcrafted has transpired into my jewelry making. I fabricate all pieces by hand at my studio in Seattle where I use finishes that are beaten or matte to reveal the natural tone and appearance of the metal. I aim to create jewelry that is vibrant and tactile, as well as a form of self expression for those who wear it. My design process comes from wanting to create pieces that are unique and inspiring, rather than following the latest fashion or trends. | ||||
