Artist Statement
When I first explored text I was interested in its aesthetic value but I now find its emotive potential far more interesting. I’m intrigued with writing that ‘touches’ me personally, passages that trigger an involuntary upwelling of emotion as I read them. Sometimes it’s the poetry in the words, or the elegance of a well chosen metaphor, or that by association the reading brings a forgotten memory to mind. It may even be the story ‘behind’ the passage as is the case with Sappho’s poetry. Passages which can be enjoyed both intellectually and emotionally are a joy to find. They are my gems. Materials, Process and CareThe hollow porcelain beads are surprisingly strong and robust, but please be careful not to drop them as they may not survive a sudden impact. The unglazed porcelain surface can be cleaned by scrubbing it gently with a soft brush and a little detergent or toothpaste. An old toothbrush works well. The beads have been slip cast with black or white porcelain - ‘Cool Ice' fired to 1200°C. The text has been hand written using underglaze ink. The tubing & fabricated findings are sterling silver with stainless steel cable. |

Education
I am drawn to simple forms and structures with strong, fluid lines, often finding inspiration in nature. I enjoy exploring decorative patterns. I especially like the aesthetics of text and also how it adds an emotive element to a piece. I work with a mixture of industrial and traditional jewellery materials and I also enjoy working with porcelain, lured to it by the ceramics process of slip casting. I have been influenced by Japanese aesthetics, the flowing forms of Art Nouveau and the simplicity of Scandinavian design. |
