Early Chinese myths told of pearls falling from the sky when dragons fought. It was also believed that there was a connection between the moon and the pearl’s soft glow. The ancient Greeks thought that pearls were formed from the tears of the gods and that wearing pearls would promote marital bliss and prevent newlywed women from crying. Natural pearls have been a cross-cultural symbol of wealth and status throughout time. The mystique of pearls endures today. Nine artists have created designs for this show that reflect their own personal connection to this treasure of the sea.
